I started leaving my washing machine’s fabric softener dispenser filled with white vinegar instead of softener for every load for 14 days this July. This is what happened

by the end of the 14 days

One unexpected benefit was that my washing machine smelled fresher. I have a front-load washer, and like many front-load owners, I’ve had those moments where the rubber gasket or dispenser area starts smelling just a little swampy if I’m not careful. During these two weeks, that mild stale smell improved.

I’m not saying vinegar replaced proper washer maintenance. I still wipe the gasket, leave the door cracked open, and run a cleaning cycle regularly. But using vinegar in the softener compartment seemed to help cut down on lingering detergent and softener residue. The dispenser drawer also looked cleaner and less slimy than it sometimes does after repeated use of regular softener.

10. It did not solve every laundry problem

This is where I think it’s important to be practical. Vinegar did not remove set-in stains on its own. It did not make rough
