She placed the paper in my hand.
“Your dinner is paid for. I didn’t want to make a scene.”
Before I could ask who had paid, she turned and went back inside.
I unfolded the paper. It was our receipt.
The total had been circled. Beside it was one handwritten word:
PAID.
