The Traditional Answer: Four Holes
Let’s begin with an ordinary intact shirt.
A conventional T-shirt has four major openings:
1. The neck opening
2. The left sleeve opening
3. The right sleeve opening
4. The bottom opening
So, if someone asks how many holes a normal shirt has, four is the obvious answer.
This is probably why these puzzles fool people.
The brain recognizes the object immediately.
It sees “shirt” and retrieves a familiar mental model.
That mental shortcut works perfectly well in everyday life.
But puzzles are designed to punish shortcuts.
The moment the shirt is damaged, that familiar four-hole model becomes much less reliable.
